purchase from China

Buying from China and selling back home has its own share of challenges :

  • Why is the price so low as compared to the one produced in Japan or South Korea . What’s the catch ??
  • But the price is too tempting … and all my competitors buy from China
  • Does the QC checked stamp mean anything
  • There are mostly two contracts one in English and one in Chinese … which one will be the overriding contract if there is a dispute
  • Legal jurisdiction , English law or Chinese Law , Arbitration in Shanghai , HK or Singapore ?
  • Hope  no labor law has been violated to produce these goods.
  • Best of luck to all my customers.

However China has come a long way in their quality control . I remember when China started producing bulk vessels during the commodity boom the quality was very poor. A new vessel came to India and one of its crane just fell apart ? The price of the new built vessels was around 30 pct cheaper as compared to vessels build in Japan .

The price differential remains the same. However the quality has drastically improved .

As the topic shows every one is worry about the problems from China, also they would like to do purchase there due to low cost will bring high profit. Is all goods and suppliers is bad quality and bad guys in China. No. My answers is it’s only part of suppliers. So there is popular saying that there is no cheapest price and only have cheaper price in China.

Maybe China is a best choice to purchase due to the technology growing everyday and the cost is cheaper than other country, such as Korea and Japan. And the whole industry system is much better than Indian and Vietnam. For example, our business is paper book printing, magazine printing, paper bag and boxes supplier. There will be much different price from Chinese suppliers when you inquiry. Now, who should be trust? Is the cheapest one or the most expensive ones?  Both is wrong way to do. The best way is to find a middle ones and make a proof based on your own artwork. Then you can check the quality when you got them in hand. Sample is the best one to trust.

Or you can visit their factory, also could ask your friends to visit their factory when they been there. Only the factory can control the profit and quality.

Case Bound Book Printing

What is a case bound book?

Case bound book produces a hard backed book that is strong and durable such as a commemorative book or a register. Cased-in books are made of grey board and covered with printed and laminated paper. They can also be covered with material such as PVC coated paper, book cloth, leather cloth or real leather.

Case bound book and books printing is the ideal book style of many people pursuing collections of exquisite books. It has also become the promoting way of many merchants who utilizes the qualities of case bound book printing technology, such as its collection value, visual beauty and so on, to promote their own products.

Case bound book have many names – hardbound, hardcover, hardback, bound book ,edition bound book– but they all share the same meaning: quality presentation.

case bound book printing

Most often, a case bound book has five distinctives:

  1. Cover is hard or stiff
  2. Covers are “wrapped”
  3. Smythe sewn sections
  4. Two end papers (inside the covers)
  5. Divided by the spine forms, there are square spine and round spineround spine hardcover book

There are two exceptions:

  • Pages are perfect bound rather than Smythe sewn and then bound into a hard cover
  • Some covers—but very few—may be flexible rather than hard

Anatomy of a case bound book:

case binding book

The image above is a diagram of a case bound book. These are the basic elements of a case bound book:

Headbands are the ribbon that is inserted in the spine and shows at the top and bottom of the spine in the finished book
Headbands are purely decorative (no function) but may lend a vintage or design element to the finished book
Some case bound books have no headbands
About 30% of case bound books have no headband; of those which do, 70% have two headbands and 30% have one headband

End papers, until recently, were always white
Most end papers in case bound books, that we bind, are now coloured
30% of the books, that we bind, are wrapped with printed litho sheets, rather than wrapped in cloth
Over 90% of the case bound books we bind are square-backed rather than round-backed spines

Dust jackets: case wrapped books that are only stamped can look very bland with dust jackets. Dust jackets give the book an esthetic or artistic appeal. The dust jacket sets the mood or tone of the book, positions it within its genre, or provides hard-hitting sales copy.

How a case bound book is made:

A case bound book is laid out digitally page by page using a special layout program. This procedure is called “Imposing the pages,” which produce large sheets that contain 6 or 8 pages per side. These days, this layout is the basis for “etching” the 4 color plates that are used to produce full color printing. For each side of a large press sheet four large metal plates are produced, one for each of the 4 colors used for full color printing: C – Cyan, M – Magenta, Y – Yellow, K – Black. These plates are fitted onto four cylinders which are inked from trays of ink at the top of the cylinder. These are now frequently fitted automatically, but only a few years ago, and still at some printing plants, these sheets were fitted by hand.

The large sheets of paper, called forms, are fed through rollers which are opposite the plates. The rollers press against the plates and transfer the ink which is sitting in the etched pits in the plates, to the paper. Four colors of ink are laid on top of each other as the sheets pass through the press which has 4 sets of rollers and plates .case binding book

End of the press

At the other end of the press the sheets fall into a stack, and a pressman is there watching to make sure the sheets are printing correctly. If the color is not looking correct, they slow down the presses and make the correct color adjustments. Some dust may have gotten onto the press sheets, and the pressmen find it, remove it, and move on. Then once both sides of the forms are printed and the ink is dry, the sheets are folded so that the pages become little booklets 12 or 16 pages long, called “signatures”.

When you look at a press sheet some of the pages will be upside down, some will be right side up, and most of them do not seem to be in the expected order. That’s because they still need to be folded. To get an idea of what this looks like, take a piece of xerox paper and fold it in half starting with it in a horizontal format, then fold the longest side again, and then again.

You now have 16 pages. Put the folded long side on the left. Cut the folds off the other edges. Now draw a little triangle with the pointy end up on the lower outer edge of each page, and inside the triangle put the page number in sequence starting at one, going through 16.

When you unfold the “booklet” you will find some interesting things out about book layout. Notice which pages are right side up and upside down. You will notice some double page spreads are together, most are not. As you study this sheet you will understand a lot more about book production. Every designer should do this exercise!

How to import from China to Australia

The road to import from China is paved with broken dreams, misplaced trust and the occasional dodgy supplier.

import from china| CBP Printing factory
CBP Printing is located in Shenzhen,China

More common however are two genuine, well intentioned parties that cannot seem to bridge the cultural and communication gap to

successfully work together. Successfully being profitably – for both importer and supplier.

Make no mistake however, China is still the default supplier to the world, and for the most part can produce some fantastic products

to import, at margins which deliver the importer a very healthy profit they can build a very successful business around. The key is HOW to navigate the process, profitably.

Tips For Import from China

To ensure your import from china is successful, you’ll need to be aware of government regulations, including clearance by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and duty taxes.

Licensing and permits

Whilst there is no general licence required for importing, Australian Customs will need to clear your goods on import. You’ll need to know:

  • what import permits, quarantine permits and treatments apply to your specific category and type of imported goods
  • and whether they are subject to mandatory safety or information standards.

If you don’t follow the correct steps and regulations, you will risk breaking the law and not receiving your imports.

Australian Customs requirements for imports

All goods imported into Australia must be cleared through the border. DIBP can provide you with information on importing goods, such as import clearance requirements, prohibited goods and import permits.

Depending on the type and value of the goods or products you import. These can include clearance fees, customs duty, goods and services tax (GST) and other taxes.

Some goods may carry special restrictions or may even be prohibited from importing. If your goods contain industrial chemicals like cosmetics, solvents, adhesives, plastics, inks, printing and photocopying chemicals, paints, household cleaning products and toiletries, they will require additional registration.

If your goods also fall under quarantine regulations, the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources will need to inspect and possibly treat them.

Search the Industry Capability Network to see if there is a supplier in Australia,if you’re considering importing goods because you can’t find a local supplier.

Tax For Importing from China

Australian importers enjoy slightly lower duty rates, compared to their counterparts in the United States and the European Union. Probably because Australia is a smaller market – with fewer critical industries to protect from outside competition. Below follows a list of products and their respective duty rate in Australia:import from china to Australia | custom-tax

  • Wristwatches: 0%
  • Tablet PC: 0%
  • Solar Panels: 0%
  • T Shirts: 10%
  • Electric Bikes: 5%
  • LED Bulb Lights: 5%
  • Peanuts: 5%

Minimum thresholds

Australians also enjoy a very generous minimum threshold, when importing from China. Imports of products valued up to AU$1000 are exempt from custom duties, GST and Import Processing Charge. That’s not enough to reach the MOQ requirement of most suppliers, but it can certainly save a few dollars when buying product samples from Chinese suppliers.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

GST is added on of the Customs Value of the imported items, transportation and insurance – plus the customs duty. Currently at 10%, the GST applies to most products imported from China to Australia.

Import Processing Charge

Imported goods valued more than AU$1000 are subject to an Import Processing Charge. The amount depends on three factors:

  1. Mode of transportation (Sea or Air Freight)
  2. Type of import declaration (Electronic or Documentary Import Declaration)
  3. Customs Value (Goods valued between AU$1,000 to 10,000, and goods valued more than AU$10,000)

Each import declaration will charge. This means that you pay the Import Processing Charge each time you receive a shipment from China. Luckily, the charge is usually in the range of AU$40 – 50. Click here to read more about the Import Processing Charge.

How to save tax in importing from China?

  • Customs value

Custom duties, GST and Import Processing Charges are based on the goods FOB (Free on Board) value. This includes the following:

  1. Product cost
  2. Transportation cost (to Port of Loading in China)
  3. Export clearance (China)

Suggest you can discuss with the book printing supplier to reduce the value on the invoice. It can help save much tax.

  • Certificate of Original

(Form for China-Australia Free Trade Agreement)

The Certificate similar as below could help you pay less around 5% tax. Don’t forget ask it from your supplier. We are a printing factory and professional in book printing exporting; so CBP Printing will provide certficate to help customer save tax.

FAQ of importing from China

Will custom stop my goods?  What do I do?

Customs will stop your goods if they meet ANY of the below criteria.

  1. Have a value over AUD $1,000.
  2. Contain Alcohol or Tobacco of ANY quantity or value.
  3. Contain goods of “Customs Interest” being ANY goods listed on (Google search: SACThesaurus_050725.pdf)
  4. Contain Prohibited Imports listed on (Google search: page4369.asp)

If your goods do not meet any of the above criteria then they are not of Customs or Quarantine interest and will be released upon arrival and subsequently delivered to your door without cost.
What to do if your goods are stopped by Customs
In most cases goods purchased on eBay are shipped via EMS (Express Mail Service).  Once your goods arrive in Australia you will receive in the mail an “Australia Post Arrival Notice”.

Once you receive this notice you have two options, you can have a Customs Broker clear the goods for you (See Section III) or you can clear the goods yourself (see Section IV).

How do I clear the goods through Customs myself?

Step 1 – Familiarise yourself with the 54 page Customs Import Declaration Guide (Google search: DocImpDecGuide.pdf) when you are ready to import from china.

Step 2 – Classify every product in your consignment in accordance with the Customs Tariff(Google search: tariff/tariff 2012.asp)
Note: If you can’t work out the applicable Tariff Classification for your goods then you can request Customs to advise you of this reference by lodging a Tariff Advice which is usually processed within 7-10 days. (Google search: ta-guideline.pdf)

Step 4 –  Complete the postal import declaration (N10) – (Google search: B374-Importdeclaration-goodN10Post_Submit.pdf)
IMPORTANT:  All information provided on your declaration (including tariff classifications) must be in accordance with the relevant import legislation contained within the Customs Act.   Failure to do so may render you liable for penalty of up to $2,550 under section 243T for providing false or misleading information to Customs. (Google search: CustomsAct1901.pdf).

Step 5 – Fax or email your completed declaration to customs and wait 5 – 8 business days for them to process it, provided all information is complete and error free – if not, your documentation will be returned to you for amendment and resubmission.
Step 6 – If you completed everything correctly the first time, then Customs will generate an entry for you, calculate the Duty/GST and Customs Charges payable and submit your credit card details to their accounts department for billing.  It usually takes a further 2-3 days for the accounts department to process your credit card and release your goods for delivery by Australia Post.

Customization personifies printing

The past year marked a reversal of fortunes in the calendar industry.

Traditional calendar makers, who have long dominated the market, are languishing, while customized calendar websites are thriving after years of struggling.

Declining business was evident at two major calendar wholesale markets in Guangdong””s provincial capital Guangzhou when China Daily visited in December, while customized printer Yofus.com””s staff worked overtime to fill the onslaught of orders.

Online personalized – printing services are blossoming after seven years of striving to take root, Yofus Digital Technology Co Ltd CEO Dong Zuming said.

Calendars printed with such images – of time with loved ones or a baby””s first smile – became popular New Year gifts in 2014, he said.

Near the year””s end, 2,229 services came up on a search for “2015 DIY personalized calendars” on China””s largest online shopping website, Taobao.

Customers can use online platforms to upload photos into templates, and then customized calendars are delivered to their doors.

Netizens can also instead use personalized printing sites like Yxp.163.com and Yofus.com.

DIY calendars typically cost between 20 yuan ($3.2) and 40 yuan.

Such sites also provide a range of personalized – printing products, including photo books, postcards, posters, puzzles, mugs and T – shirts.

Web – based photo – printing services originated in the United States with Shutterfly and Snapfish, both founded in 1999 to “turn digital snapshots into tangible things”.

Online personalized printing arrived in China around 2008.Many providers sprang up in the following three years. But it is only in the past two years that business has surged, Dong said.

“The rise is based on the development of printing technologies, DIY software, quality smartphone photography and mobile Internet,” Dong said.

Digital printing reduced the costs of printing small quantities. Creating stencils during the offset – printing era was expensive, he explained.

Improved smartphone – photo quality and mobile Internet have made DIY online printing easier, he said.

“More important are the trends in which people value uniqueness, and pursue and share happiness,” Dong said.

Yofus engages social networks by providing digital versions of DIY calendars users can easily share on WeChat, China””s biggest instant – messaging platform, and Sina Weibo, China””s answer to Twitter.

These versions contain links enabling followers to make their own or buy their friends””.

Exploring the ””blue sea””

China””s first e – commerce printing annual symposium was staged in 2013 – the year regarded as the beginning of the industry””s rapid growth.

“Internet – based personalized printing is still in its initial stage. The market growth requires more publicity,” Dong said.

“We need to change the idea that producing printed material is expensive and time – consuming, and requires big orders of several thousand copies. It can be quick and easy, and a single copy.”

Chen Wanwen used Yxp.163.com to make a desk calendar with photos of her travels with her boyfriend for his birthday.

“Work was busy, and I didn””t use the templates, so it took men early two months to select the photos and lay out each page,” the 28 – year – old public relations worker in Guangzhou said.

“But it was worth the time and effort because it””s unique. It may not be as fancy or expensive as a gift from a department store. But it””s a one – and – only present – one that belongs solely to us.”

It would have taken Chen minutes if she had used the templates once she selected photos, Dong said.

He said competition is “intense”.

“We must work hard to simplify procedures, design creative templates, and provide quality printing and fast delivery to stand out,” he said.

Yofus has been able to shorten printing and delivery time from seven to at most three days through its parent company Tianyi Digital Printing CoLtd””s printing network.

While printing companies ensure quality and delivery through their networks, such Web portals as Net Ease””s 163.com capitalize on their vast user bases.

This has helped the DIY personalized – photo products platform Yinxiangpai that Net Ease launched in 2007, Yinxiang pai””s head Wang Chen said.

“The users NetEase has accumulated over more than a decade enables it to promote our services through the 163.com portal and NetEase””s mail service and instant messaging tool,” he said.

“NetEase””s credibility as a strong Internet brand has won customers”” trust.”

Wang quoted NetEase CEO Ding Lei as declaring during Yinxiangpai””s launch that personalized printing is “an unexplored blue sea in e – commerce”.

Chinese printing portal Keyin.cn, which operates under the China Academy of Printing Technology, released a list of the country””s top 20 e – commerce printing websites in April 2014.

“We can expect more customized printing e – commerce platforms as social media and online – sharing technologies develop,” Keyin.cn””s report said.

“But now most such Chinese sites lack distinctive products. They””re too similar and all want to cover the ””complete”” range.”

Two sites were cited as examples in targeting niche markets.

Puffant.com focuses on postcards, while Weiyin.cc focuses on photo books with pictures and words users can publish on social media.

Yet, despite 2014””s development obstacles, online customized printing expects to do even better this year.
