Why Are There Blank Pages in Books?
Blank pages in books is not avoided.When you pick up any printed book and flip through the pages, you will almost always notice a few blank pages everywhere. Some appear at the end, some before a new chapter, and sometimes even at the very beginning.
These blank pages are not printing errors. They exist for practical and design-related reasons based on how books are printed.
1. Blank Pages at the End of Books
The most common blank pages appear at the end of the book. This happens because of a printing mechanism called a “signature.”
In book printing, many pages are printed together on a large sheet of paper. This paper is folded into a section called “Signature,” which usually contains 16, 24 and 32 pages. Multiple pages are stacked and bound together to create your book.
There is a problem here. If your book has 285 pages, this number is not divisible by 16 or 32. So the printer must round up to the nearest complete signature, resulting in a few blank pages at the end.
This method actually reduces printing cost and time. Because printing the exact number of pages individually would be more complex and expensive.
2. Blank Pages in Books Before New Chapters
These pages are not a technical requirement but a design choice. Many authors choose to start each chapter on the right-hand page (also called the recto).
If the previous chapter ends on the right-hand page, the left page (verso) is intentionally left blank
This helps:
- Create visual separation.
- Improve reading flow.
- Give readers a moment to pause.
However, budget-friendly books like paperbacks and technical manuals often skip this practice and begin the next chapter immediately. This reduces the total number of pages and lowers printing costs.
3. Front and Back Matter Blank Pages
Some blank pages appear in the front matter (title page, copyright display page, dedication) or back matter (acknowledgement, author bio).
Here’s why publishers do this:
- To improve visual balance.
- To protect important pages.
- To follow the standard book layout structure.
In hardcover books, the first page is usually blank to connect the cover and body pages and protect the title page from damage.
4. Offset vs Digital Printing Differences
Your printing method affects how many blank pages your book may have.
Offset printing uses the traditional signature system with 16-32 page sheets. This works best for larger print runs over 500 copies.
Digital printing often uses smaller signatures of 4-8 pages. Fewer pages per signature means fewer blank pages at the end. Digital printing costs more per unit but works perfectly for smaller quantities.
5. Planning Your Book Layout
Understanding how blank pages work helps you plan a better plan. If your manuscript has 247 pages, your final printed book will likely be 256 pages (when using 16 pages of signatures). This is completely normal.

- Or simply leave it blank.
Blank pages do not increase your cost. This is because printers work with full signatures anyway.
